Our trip on Wednesday was Salt Lake City, to Moab, to Canyonlands National Park to Grand Junction, Utah.
The song for the day was “Don’t Fence Me In” sung by Bing Crosby - with video from my iPhone at the amazing Canyonlands lookout.
A Filled National Park at Arches: Arrived at Arches National Park near Moab, Utah at 1 pm - only to find that the park was totally filled - the fence blocking the entrance said to come back 3 to 5 hours later. Wow - people are traveling! We missed seeing the bold and striking Arches (photo from National Park Service):
But, the map showed two other nearby destinations that were intriguing:
Canyonlands National Park:
The majesty of the rock formations, the color of the sands and the views that filled our hearts was amazing. Dimensions of space and vastness of Earth!
Moab Concentration Camp: As producers of the Broadway show, Allegiance, which focused on the internment of Americans of Japanese descent during World War II, we were alerted to a small sign on the road from Moab that merely said “Historical Marker”. Searching the internet, it became clear that this was the site of the “Moab Detention Center” that was used in 1943 to detain men who had been “trouble-makers” in camps in other states. This is one of the few photos from the original camp.
“The Moab camp inmates were mostly well educated men, some of whom had fought for America in the first World War, and who were simply questioning the right of the government to place them in prison without a given reason, in violation of their civil rights and without any sort of hearing.” Historical analysis of the prisoners.”
The only recognition of the camp was 1/2 of a marker sign at Dalton Wells was:
Here is a clip from Allegiance, that was on Broadway several years ago, starring my friend and colleague George Takei:
Navigating 8.800 Miles - Thanks GPS: A deep thank you to the Tesla’s GPS system that has kept us on track, “charged” and traveling around the United States. The system actually looks at the current battery charge in the car, the destination for that segment and defines charging stations - along with how many of them are empty at the moment. It suggests minutes of charge to get to the next charger or your destination. Thanks, GPS:
Work, Exercise and on to Denver: Just finished a pre-keynote briefing with my colleagues from Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City to prepare for a keynote that I will be delivering tomorrow from Denver. Some time on the Treadmill and heading East.
